dig

Mid April plan

Posted on

I’m at the stage that I need a plan again.

Things I need to do on the plot this weekend:
– Check sweet peas and sweetcorn are alive and possibly plant in the ground.
– Get my structures in place. Bamboo poles please!
– Clear ‘back area’ on my plot ready for the hammock stand in may.
– Sow beetroot, chard seeds direct in soild.
– Find my paper plans! Probably do this first… as I may have illegally sown extra crops. And it could go horribly wrong!
– Get some wood chipping for my strawberry bed.
– Get a proper frame made for my raspberry canes, and string them up! And remove any cheeky unwanted suckers that have popped up.
-Tidy greenhouse! A good rainy day job!
– Investigate compost bin 1… And dig into back bed… I need to put a little path back in here as it proved to be impossible last year.
– Do a bit of general maintenance… Weeding, fixing, levelling…

And I think that lot will keep me busy!

Allotment update… From a few weeks ago

Posted on Updated on

I ordered my willow on Monday afternoon and Wednesday it was due to arrive! Wednesday was forecast to be a lovely sunny day; so I made the most of a calmer time of year at work, and took the day off.

I had a great day. It rained a little, but I had glimpses of glorious sunshine by the afternoon!

– I removed a path
– Dug over the 4 yr old path, and two beds that are now one big bed! Should be perfect for my potatoes!
-cleared, lifted and re made another path
– And did a bit of general wedding and pottering!

Easter weekend: plot visits

Posted on

I made it down the plot on Easter Sunday! I had a good dig and got one potato bed all set. Just waiting to add the all important potatoes. I did some weeding; this time of year they pop up so fast! But I did have time to admire the welcome weeds…

Nice weeds

I fixed a path (removing evil weeds that spread under our paths (when we first got the plot I recall how we thought this was asparagus!… Makes me laugh every time!). It’s one of those necessary but very boring jobs.

Finally finished organising my strawberries! I decided to remove the old aged plants at the end of the bed. And I went back on the Monday and put onions in. (I’m not sure they are exactly companion plants..  But a space is a space… Right?!)

On Monday I went back. And got the remaining onion and garlic in… Just one box left. I am searching for a suitable empty spot.

Greenhouse:
-Sweet peas. Ticking along after the re pot.

Seedling trays:
-sunflowers. In hiding still
-borage. Germinated
-lettuce. Germinated… Just about

image
Seedlings

-cat mint… A few tiny seedlings have appeared
-lucky dip. Some little seedling have emerged… Still no ideas! I will have to post photos for help!
-Beetroot. Germinated

image

-Nasturtium. Germinated it’s virtually a weed… But a weed tgat
-tomatoes. Germinated and potted into larger pots
-My back up beans sprouted, and I popped them into the plot yesterday… I had dug up a few poor bean seeds by accident… But a few sown direct into the ground made it! Which was good news!!

Seeds at home:
-Cucumbers… I have about 4 growing away happily. I will move these out to the greenhouse soon!
-Chillies. Growing away happily. I’m going to keep half in the flat and half in the greenhouse as a mini experiment

-Courgette… Still no shows. This is the one veg I struggle to get going every year. I’m sure it should be easy!!?
-Soybeans. In hiding
-Caped gosberries. In hiding

And then I went home and scoffed lots of chocolate!

Sunny day at the plot :)

Posted on

I got to the plot at around 10 yesterday morning. It was snug in the greenhouse. At a toasty 17 c!

Toasty

I dug over my D. carrot bed… And I was feeling all fancy with my twine guide line!

image
Twine guides! Get me!!

I might have got a bit carried away… And sown my carrot seeds. Ooops! Historically I don’t really like carrots. So this is my first attempt at growing them. I fear I have sabotaged myself!!

image
Beautiful seeds

I then had a mad panic!… And found a closh in my shed!  Which I deformed enough to cover both rows. It was nice and hot today… So it looked like a carrot sauna by the afternoon. Fingers crossed!

Carrot sauna!

I also got a bit inspired and started putting sweet pea supports in as mini dividers! Again far to early for this sort of stuff. I just can’t help myself… And makes me look like I have a master plan (i hope) although probably that I am just a bit nutty!

I then had a little lounge in the sun! I am on holiday after all.

Lazy day

I got both my potato beds de-stoned and dug over. And had a general tidy at both ends. And added some more sweet pea triangles at the end of the back beds.

Ready for action

I built a tomato support system in my greenhouse…. Using various bits from our inherited storage rack… Every year I have issues with my giant tomato plants. This year I have a plan… No more attack of the triffids!

Then I took a photo of the lovely blue sky! 🙂 Could have been summer time!

I organised the new section of my strawberries. Hopefully this means I have an over lap what I take out my 3 year old starwberries. I just need to sort out the crazy back section!…

Strawberries

I feel like I am getting set for spring now! But I also got told I can’t have anymore space for my growing 😭… I was hopeful to upgrade to a second half plot. But with requests for space now out weighing demand… It can’t be helped. Which is good news for the allotment site, just not for this ambitious grower! So the plan is that I need to become more ingenious with my space!! I might need to invest in some more growing bags…

Right now time to get set for work… Back to reality! I might have to take myself on a walk at lunch… Think it’s another sunny one today!

Potato sunbathing!

Posted on Updated on

Our potatoes arrived the week before last (yippee!)… As I’m sharing half with my mother, she kindly offered to chit them on her super sunny window sill! Hopefully they will get a flying start! Here they are sunbathing!! Oh for the life of a potato!

image
Potatoes at the ready!

We ordered:
Potato ‘Rocket’ (First Early)
Potato ‘Pentland Javelin’ (First Early) Boiling as a salad or new potato.
Potato ‘Lady Christl’ (First Early)  Potato ‘Kestrel’ (Second Early)
Potato ‘Desiree’ (Early Maincrop)
Potato ‘Cara’ (Late Maincrop)

In previous years I have gone a bit wild on poatoes. Only having a half plot I usually run out of space!! So this year we have hopefully ordered a sensible amount of potatoes.

Going for the Easter weekend as a good potatoes in date… I think that’s the potato law?! Right?

I’m looking forward to the coming weekend dig! Fingers crossed it’s a sunny one! 🌞
