sweet peas

Sunny day at the plot :)

Posted on

I got to the plot at around 10 yesterday morning. It was snug in the greenhouse. At a toasty 17 c!

I dug over my D. carrot bed… And I was feeling all fancy with my twine guide line!

Twine guides! Get me!!

I might have got a bit carried away… And sown my carrot seeds. Ooops! Historically I don’t really like carrots. So this is my first attempt at growing them. I fear I have sabotaged myself!!

Beautiful seeds

I then had a mad panic!… And found a closh in my shed!  Which I deformed enough to cover both rows. It was nice and hot today… So it looked like a carrot sauna by the afternoon. Fingers crossed!

Carrot sauna!

I also got a bit inspired and started putting sweet pea supports in as mini dividers! Again far to early for this sort of stuff. I just can’t help myself… And makes me look like I have a master plan (i hope) although probably that I am just a bit nutty!

I then had a little lounge in the sun! I am on holiday after all.

Lazy day

I got both my potato beds de-stoned and dug over. And had a general tidy at both ends. And added some more sweet pea triangles at the end of the back beds.

Ready for action

I built a tomato support system in my greenhouse…. Using various bits from our inherited storage rack… Every year I have issues with my giant tomato plants. This year I have a plan… No more attack of the triffids!

Then I took a photo of the lovely blue sky! 🙂 Could have been summer time!

Blue sky in Feb

I organised the new section of my strawberries. Hopefully this means I have an over lap what I take out my 3 year old starwberries. I just need to sort out the crazy back section!…

I feel like I am getting set for spring now! But I also got told I can’t have anymore space for my growing 😭… I was hopeful to upgrade to a second half plot. But with requests for space now out weighing demand… It can’t be helped. Which is good news for the allotment site, just not for this ambitious grower! So the plan is that I need to become more ingenious with my space!! I might need to invest in some more growing bags…

Right now time to get set for work… Back to reality! I might have to take myself on a walk at lunch… Think it’s another sunny one today!

Day off= my idea of a holiday at the plot!

I have a few days off work this week. So it’s a great excuse to get to my beloved plot!

Sweet peas are in 🙂

Sweet peas. Soaked and sown

Last year I grew them in side, this year I am being tough! 💪 starting them off in the green house (no fancy heating, but I do have a door :)).

I got my chilli peppers in… I plan to start these off back at home.

Chilli pepers

I have a bit of a headache today so I have retreated home. Not before I tipped one of pots of peppers over 😱. Feeling poorly and gardening don’t really work. I need to make a medical kit for the plot… Pain killers, plasters… Maybe some antiseptic tissues!

But now I need lunch! Just need to move the furry heater (the cat) off my lap (she is making the most off me having a day off work) then back to the plot for stage 2!

Snoozy cat

Peas in all forms!

Morning plotting all done!
Finally finished the mad sweet peas with bamboo castle!

I also untangled and pinned my peas up… Hard to know where one pea begins another ends.

I found half a brick…. Never ending rubble discovery!

My sweet peas are going strong, but I’m not sure they will be making flowers by this time next month. Fingers crossed!!

My potatoes are appearing.

And my strawberries are making some amazing fruit!

Exciting times! But also very rainy and muddy too!

It’s been a while since my last post! Yesterday I made the most of the lovely sunshine. And got a slightly scorched back. Time for sun cream obviously!

My sweet peas are doing well

-tomatoes potted up
-stocks potted up

-larkspur shooting
-lysimachia ephemerum shooting
-stocks incana (Cinderella) shooting
-gypsophila shooting (outside)

Also I got some more seeds in;
Cosmos sonata
Borage (summer skies)
Poppy (angles choir mixed)

I have one lot of seeds that have not shooted, but I have lot track of what’s what, so perhaps it will all with out ok.

Also got some leek seeds and onion sets in.

Worried that I do not have enough space for my plans this year. So I might need to dig up the tarp area at some stage.

Lovely to see some sunshine and lots of lady birds!

They made it!

It’s been a little frosty our way. But after a quick inspection this morning; the sweet peas have made it! However some horticultural fleece is on the shopping list! The next question is can I find some in central London… On my lunch break!?… Otherwise it’s an annoying stop off at homebase tonight.

This is some of my sweet peas (taken on a rather more sunny day)!

Weekend plot visit

Posted on Updated on

Last weekend I made it to the plot!
We finally did that dump run! But my car was looking pretty laiden… So it will be another run soon with the straglers soon. But the plot looks much more respectable!

I took another good chunk out of the offending mountain of soil that our predecessor left… So many stones, bricks, glass and even some wire mesh. But it’s nearly cleared. And I am recycling the stones and bricks; so it has it’s upside.

I carved out a nice hearty step on the back left side of our plot. And used my new found bricks to reinforce the sides. And then I got my amazing tarp all pegged in. So it looks beautiful (as a step can be) and much more practical in this wet weather. I’m going to try and make that my wildlife area… Perhaps a fully fledged bug hotel! I hope to turn my back bed over to flowers.

I had my first reminder that the ‘kitchen is not a greenhouse!’ So I swiftly dissipated the pots with prospective sweet peas around our flat. Last year we had tomatoes on every surface… Then the chillies took hold… So he may have a point!

But I got my sweet peas in… And it seems to early….but I’m sure I saw a shoot today. I covered it over as it must be really shallow… But I will investigate further

My potatoes have been delayed… But fingered crossed they arrive next week.
