Clocks forward and wind inspection!

Posted on Updated on

With the clocks changing I had my first after work plot visit today!
– Check nothing blow away- ☑
– Garlic intact- ☑
– Mini water in the greenhouse- ☑
– Inspect seedlings + feel excited ☑

I was amazed a second mini prop, possibly some more water and some time. And nearly all my greenhouse seedling are emerging! I don’t know if I am amazed… just very pleased; this is my first year starting tomatoes off in the greenhouse (small victory dance)!

The big seed sowing day…

Posted on Updated on

It was a cold Sunday morning! Not the best allotment weather. I only had an hour or so… Bit manic with it being mother’s day!

So I got my seed hit list selected. Flossie helped!

And then i legged it to sow in the greenhouse:
Tomatoes
Sunflower
Beetroot
Borage
Broadbeans…as I might have dug some of mine up in my impatience for them to grow outside. Probably need a much bigger pot to….! Let’s call it an experiment!

The cucumber and courgette seeds went in, and taken back to the safety of the mini greenhouse in my kitchen.

And I covered my rhubarb… Monty said so!! As did a magazing cutting from a friend at work 🙂 so I thought I better do it! I recycled the half water butt left on our plot.

Now you see it.... Rhubarb

Now you don't!

I got some proper photos of my onions and garlic…

And the beloved sweet peas!!

I ran out of seed compost… So that was my lot. I’m going to hang back with my outdoor seeds as the weather is really turning at the moment. Brrr!

Sunny day at the plot :)

I got to the plot at around 10 yesterday morning. It was snug in the greenhouse. At a toasty 17 c!

Toasty

I dug over my D. carrot bed… And I was feeling all fancy with my twine guide line!

image
Twine guides! Get me!!

I might have got a bit carried away… And sown my carrot seeds. Ooops! Historically I don’t really like carrots. So this is my first attempt at growing them. I fear I have sabotaged myself!!

Beautiful seeds

I then had a mad panic!… And found a closh in my shed!  Which I deformed enough to cover both rows. It was nice and hot today… So it looked like a carrot sauna by the afternoon. Fingers crossed!

Carrot sauna!

I also got a bit inspired and started putting sweet pea supports in as mini dividers! Again far to early for this sort of stuff. I just can’t help myself… And makes me look like I have a master plan (i hope) although probably that I am just a bit nutty!

I then had a little lounge in the sun! I am on holiday after all.

Lazy day

I got both my potato beds de-stoned and dug over. And had a general tidy at both ends. And added some more sweet pea triangles at the end of the back beds.

Ready for action

I built a tomato support system in my greenhouse…. Using various bits from our inherited storage rack… Every year I have issues with my giant tomato plants. This year I have a plan… No more attack of the triffids!

Then I took a photo of the lovely blue sky! 🙂 Could have been summer time!

I organised the new section of my strawberries. Hopefully this means I have an over lap what I take out my 3 year old starwberries. I just need to sort out the crazy back section!…

I feel like I am getting set for spring now! But I also got told I can’t have anymore space for my growing 😭… I was hopeful to upgrade to a second half plot. But with requests for space now out weighing demand… It can’t be helped. Which is good news for the allotment site, just not for this ambitious grower! So the plan is that I need to become more ingenious with my space!! I might need to invest in some more growing bags…

Right now time to get set for work… Back to reality! I might have to take myself on a walk at lunch… Think it’s another sunny one today!

The chillies and the skinned finger

Posted on Updated on

So we tried the chillies!
They were hot and smell like rhubarb. I am now trying to re home my mountain of chocolate habenero chillies, as they literally set your mouth on fire! But I am going to try a rocket booster chutney with a few! Also my ‘nice’ chillies are getting ripe… finally.

Today I gathered a surprising amount of tomatoes, some small Courgettes and Rosemary (which I accidentally lopped off) not a bad haul! I’m amazed my tomatoes just keep going in the greenhouse. Even with once a week watering!

image

I also skinned my finger, whilst digging in half the  green manure. You can are the rather hedge like patch…

I saw a late sweet pea flower too!

First prize medium tomatoes!

I thought I was silly entering, but I ended up with first prize for my tomatoes! Which was a lovely surprise and I was very amazed!

Non digging weekend

Posted on Updated on

Didn’t make it down this weekend but….

My tomatoes are rocketing along; enjoying the sunshine on the window sills. I am a little worried where I am going to keep them as they get bigger. Also thinking when I do put them out… I need to animal proof my balcony to avoid the birds using my flower pots as landing platforms like last year! Nothing sadder that a squashed tomatoe plant.

I put my free trial beans in pots and they are starting to emerge… Have planted two per pot so hopefully I should have some survivors.

Also I visited my grandparent at the weekend and they donated two propagators to the growing cause. They are a huge improvement on my flimsy ones! Hopefully they will help lots of little plants get going. My Gran was telling me all about her father who was a head gardener, I just hope I inherited some of the skills!

So now all i can do is imagine how the weeds have progressed in the sunny weather and thinking about my revenge. I was hopeful to go after work, but I’m so busy with work that I see lots of late nights on the cards. But we shall see…
